We're often asked which reference type to use when citing an article from UpToDate.com. APA 7 calls for UpToDate articles to be formatted like periodicals.
The APA website has more detail on how an UpToDate article should be formatted: https://apastyle.apa.org/style-grammar-guidelines/references/examples/uptodate-article-references
To create an UpToDate reference in PERRLA, follow these steps:
- Select the Journal reference type.
- Under Choose a type, select An article in a database.
- Fill out all of the relevant information.
- In the Database Name field, type UpToDate.
- Include a Retrieval Date since the content is designed to change over time.
Your UpToDate reference will now be formatted in accordance with APA 7.
Auto-fill Reference Search
You should be able to use PERRLA's auto-fill reference search to find most UpToDate articles. However, some UpToDate articles require a subscription to access, which means the auto-fill search won't be able to retrieve them.
In those cases, use the Journal reference type and fill in the reference information manually as described above.
