If you're using a direct quotation in your paper and it is more than 40 words, APA 7 requires that you format it as a block quote. Luckily, PERRLA can apply that formatting for you.
This can be done in two ways, both of which are covered below.
First Technique
- Type your block quote.
- Highlight the block quote.
- Click the Text & Heading Style button in the PERRLA ribbon.
- Choose Block Quote.
You'll notice that the entire block quote will now be indented 0.5 inch from the left margin.
Second Technique
- Place your cursor where you want the block quote to appear.
- Click the Text & Heading Style button in the PERRLA ribbon.
- Choose Block Quote.
- Type your block quote.
The entire block quote will automatically be indented 0.5 inch from the left margin as you type it.
Notes Regarding Block Quotes
Block quotes do not include quotation marks around them.
Place the citation after the ending punctuation of the last sentence of the quote, not inside the ending punctuation.
If you have multiple paragraphs in your block quote, any paragraphs after the first one should also include a 0.5 inch indent on the first line. So, after applying the block quote format to the paragraphs, make sure to hit the TAB button on your keyboard to indent that first line in each paragraph after the first one.
