An abstract provides a succinct description of your paper in a single paragraph of between 150 and 250 words. It is often followed by a keywords section.
Adding an Abstract
Papers created after July 20, 2026
In PERRLA Online, you'll use the Navigator to the left of your paper to add sections.
- Click the + icon next to Navigator.
- Under Paper Parts, click Abstract.
PERRLA will add an Abstract page at the correct location in your paper.
Papers created before July 20, 2026
- Go to the PERRLA ribbon tab.
- Click Abstract.
PERRLA will open the Abstract panel to the right of your paper. - Click Add an Abstract in the panel.
PERRLA will add an Abstract page as the second page of your paper, along with a prompt where you can type your abstract and a place for Keywords.
There is also a large green Add Abstract button immediately following your Title Page. Clicking it accomplishes the same thing.
Removing an Abstract
Papers created after July 20, 2026
- In the Navigator, click the three dots next to Abstract.
- Choose Delete section.
- Click Yes, Delete to confirm.
Papers created before July 20, 2026
Click Abstract in the PERRLA ribbon tab after an abstract has been added and you'll be taken to the same panel – this time with the option to Remove Abstract. Click it to remove the abstract from your paper.
Removing the Keywords section
By default, PERRLA includes a Keywords section on the abstract page. If you don't need it, highlight the keywords section and press the Delete key.
