APA, MLA, or Turabian formats do not offer guidelines for creating a Table of Contents in a paper. However, plenty of professors still ask for their students to create them.
PERRLA's Add-in uses the basic formatting rules for APA, MLA, and Turabian to create a Table of Contents that meets the standards for both formats.
Before you start a Table of Contents
In PERRLA, the Table of Contents is always built from the Heading styles you insert into your paper, plus any sections you may have added as well. To create a new entry in the Table of Contents, you must use the Headings available in the PERRLA ribbon tab.
How to add a Table of Contents
Once you have a PERRLA paper open and added some Headings to your paper, you're ready to create your Table of Contents.
- Go to the PERRLA ribbon tab
- Click Table of Contents
- Click Add Table of Contents
This will create the Table of Contents section in your paper. - Right-click the text on the Table of Contents page & select Update Field
That's it! Your Table of Contents will now show all of the headings and sections you've added to your paper.
Updating the Table of Contents
If you add more Headings or edit existing ones, you'll need to update your Table of Contents again. It's easy.
- Right-click on the Table of Contents
- Select Update Field
You will be asked if you want to update just the table numbers or the entire table. You can choose to update the entire table to update the page numbers and text.
