If you're using a direct quotation of more than 40 words in your paper, APA 7 requires that you format it as a block quote. PERRLA can apply that formatting for you in two ways.
Format after typing
- Type your block quote.
- Highlight the block quote.
- Click the Text & Heading Style button in the PERRLA ribbon.
- Choose Block Quote.
The block quote will be indented 0.5 inch from the left margin.
Format before typing
- Place your cursor where you want the block quote to appear.
- Click the Text & Heading Style button in the PERRLA ribbon.
- Choose Block Quote.
- Type your block quote.
The block quote will be automatically indented 0.5 inch from the left margin as you type.
Notes on block quotes
- Block quotes do not include quotation marks.
- Place the citation after the ending punctuation of the last sentence of the quote, not before it.
- If your block quote spans multiple paragraphs, each paragraph after the first should include an additional 0.5 inch indent on the first line. After applying the block quote format, press the Tab key to indent the first line of each subsequent paragraph.
