Tables help present information and data that can at times be difficult to convey using words alone. Attempting to describe massive amounts of numerical data in the body of your paper can be difficult to read. When such data is presented in a table, it is much more easily interpreted.
How to insert a Table
Like Citations, Tables are added to your paper wherever you place your cursor. Be sure your cursor is in you paper where you want the figure to be inserted.
- Go to the PERRLA ribbon tab
- Click Insert Table
- Enter the details for your table: Table Title, Number of Columns, Number of Rows, and if needed, Table Notes. Table notes are optional. They’re used to clarify information and avoid repetition in a table. If you choose to include table notes, click the Include Notes checkbox.
- Click the Insert Table button.
Great! PERRLA will insert your table where you originally placed your cursor.
Updating the Table Number
At the moment, Word doesn’t allow PERRLA to automatically update the Table Number for you. But updating it is easy.
- Right-click where it says (Right-click and select “Update Field”)
The table number is always directly below the figure itself. - Select Update Field
That’s it! Whenever you add a new table, PERRLA will automatically set the table number for you – no matter where it is in your paper.
If you add a new table before ones that you previously added to the paper, after you have set the table number in the new table using the instructions above, you'll also need to go back to the previously added tables and update those table numbers. You'll do this by right clicking directly on the table number and then choosing Update Field. So, for a table labeled Table 1, you'd right click directly on the "1" to choose Update Field.
Working with your Table
Once your table has been added to the paper, you can edit its content, title, and notes directly in your paper. PERRLA gets it set up for you (with proper formatting) and then lets you handle it from there.
