If you've already created a reference in the correct format outside of PERRLA, you can still add it to your paper.
How to insert a manually created reference
Papers created after July 28, 2026
- Right-click the reference that should appear immediately before your manual reference.
- Choose Add Manual Reference.
- Type or paste your reference into the blank space that appears.
PERRLA automatically applies the correct hanging indent to your manual reference, even if it takes up more than one line. Any reference you add after your manual one will be placed correctly.
Note: PERRLA cannot verify that your manually added reference is in the correct alphabetical order – that part is up to you.
Papers created before July 28, 2026
PERRLA Online does not support adding manual references directly to these papers. Instead, download your paper as a Word document, then open it in Word to add your reference. Place your cursor at the end of the reference that should appear immediately before it, then press Enter and type or paste in your reference – the hanging indent formatting carries over automatically.
