In a narrative citation, the author's name appears in the sentence itself rather than within parentheses.
In the example above, author Cliff Christi is mentioned by name in the sentence. Including his name again in a parenthetical citation would be redundant. APA accounts for this by allowing you to omit the author's name from the citation.
Narrative citations work the same way in the PERRLA for Word Add-in and PERRLA Online.
Creating a Narrative Citation
- Place your cursor where you want the citation.
- Click + Add Citation under the correct reference.
- Select the parts to include in the citation.
For a narrative citation, you'll typically only select Date since the author's name is already in the sentence. - Click Create Citation.
Your narrative citation is now complete.
