The PERRLA Add-in for Word is installed directly inside of Word through the Microsoft Word Add-in Store.
Here's how to get started with the PERRLA Add-in if you are using Microsoft Word that was downloaded from Apple's App Store:
- Open Microsoft Word
-
Go to the Home ribbon tab
In older versions of Microsoft Word for Windows, the Add-in button is in the Insert ribbon tab. -
Select Get Add-ins to open Microsoft AppSource in your browser
If your screen is smaller, you may need to click Add-ins before you see Get Add-ins from the dropdown menu. - Search for PERRLA in the search bar
-
Under PERRLA in "App results," click Get it now
You may be prompted to log in to Microsoft.
- Click Continue
- Click Open in Word
-
Select My Add-ins (similar location to step 3)
If your screen is smaller, you may need to click Add-ins before you see My Add-ins from the dropdown menu. - Click Refresh in the upper-right corner
- Double-click PERRLA
That's it!
The first time you add PERRLA, it may take a few seconds for the Add-in to load. Once it's loaded, you'll see a tooltip for the PERRLA ribbon tab.
The PERRLA ribbon tab should show up in any Word document moving forward. If it doesn't, you can add it with the Add-ins button in the Home ribbon tab. Click My Add-ins. Then, select PERRLA.
I see an "Individual acquisition" error when trying to insert the PERRLA Add-in
Some schools block the use of Add-ins for their users in Microsoft Word. There's an easy solution: log out of Microsoft Word before inserting the Add-in.

Using PERRLA in iOS
You can use the PERRLA Add-in with Microsoft Word on your iPad!
Here's how:
- Open Word on your iPad
- Go to the Home tab
- Click Add-ins on the far right
- Select See All at the bottom of the menu
- Scroll down & press Add beside PERRLA
This will open the PERRLA side panel inside of Word.
Unlike the desktop version of Word, PERRLA on iOS doesn't include its own ribbon tab at the top. However, you'll have access to everything through the side-panel and menu button.
