If you're having problems with your reference page, such as a duplicate reference or even multiple reference pages, PERRLA includes a way to refresh your reference page to remedy these problems.
To refresh your reference page, follow the steps below.
Please note that if you have appendices after your reference page, you will need to copy those and paste them into another Word document for safe keeping during this process. Once the reference page is refreshed, you can recreate the appendices and paste them back in.
Refreshing the Reference Page
- Go to Word's Home tab.
- Click the Show Hidden Characters button.
This is the button showing a paragraph symbol (¶). Once you click this button, all of the section breaks, page breaks, tabs, hard returns, etc. will be visible throughout the document.
- Highlight the entire reference page.
This includes the section break between the last paragraph in the body and the reference page. Highlighting section breaks can be tricky sometimes, so you may have to hold down the SHIFT key on your keyboard and hit the RIGHT ARROW key to highlight the section break.
- Hit the DELETE key or BACKSPACE key on your keyboard.
This will delete the reference page from your paper.
- Go to the PERRLA tab in Word.
- Click the Settings button in the PERRLA ribbon.
- In the side panel, scroll down to Paper Settings and click Refresh Reference Section.
After following these steps, you should have a brand new, properly-working reference page in your paper. If you had to remove your appendices before starting this process, don't forget to paste them back in!
