Images or Other Objects Incorrectly Showing Up in the Table of Contents (Add-in)

The table of contents in a PERRLA paper is built using the Headings that have been added throughout the paper. For more information about how a table of contents is created in a PERRLA paper, please read the Help Center article at this link: Adding a Table of Contents (Add-in).

However, you may run into an issue where an image or other object in your paper is incorrectly showing up in the table of contents. If this happens, don't worry. There is a very simple explanation, and it is very easy to fix.

The simple explanation is that you accidentally pasted the image on a line where you had previously applied a Heading style. Most often this happens when a heading has been added, and the image was pasted into the paper without hitting ENTER after creating the heading to move down to the next line.

To avoid this happening, simply make sure that you are placing such objects on the line below a heading instead of on the same line.

If this has already happened in your paper, you can fix it by following these instructions.

1. Place your cursor immediately after the heading.
2. Hit the ENTER button on your keyboard.
3. Highlight the image in the body of your paper.
4. Click the PERRLA menu at the top of Word.
5. Click the Text & Heading Style button in the PERRLA ribbon.
6. Choose Paragraph in the dropdown menu.
7. Right click anywhere within the table of contents.
8. Choose Update Field.
9. If given the choice, choose Update entire table and click the OK button.

The image should now have regular paragraph formatting applied to it and should no longer be appearing in the table of contents.

These instructions can be followed for any unwanted objects – or even text – that are incorrectly showing in the table of contents.
