PERRLA's Add-in for Microsoft Word is automatically kept up to date by Microsoft Word. That means you never have to do anything on your end to keep up with our latest features!
About once a year, we have new features that require a change in the Add-in ribbon toolbar. In those cases, Word will ask you to confirm the update.
If there's an update for you to confirm, the next time you open any of the PERRLA panels you'll be prompted with the above message.
Click "Update now" to update your PERRLA Add-in so you can keep working just like before.
Afterward, PERRLA should keep working just like normal but with a few new options in the PERRLA ribbon tab. If you experience a white screen or trouble loading PERRLA after the update, try this step to get it back up and running (Clearing the cache in Microsoft Word (Add-in)). We can sometimes see this in older versions of Windows or Word.
Not being prompted to update?
If you're missing some of our latest features and Word isn't asking you to update, then you can manually update PERRLA by removing the Add-in, then re-installing it using the Word Add-in Store. Here's how:
- Go to the Insert ribbon tab in Word
- Click My Add-ins
- Hover over PERRLA, click the three-dot icon, and select Remove
- Go to the Store tab in the same window
- Search for PERRLA
- Click Add beside the PERRLA listing
You may need to confirm the installation. If you were logged into PERRLA before, you should remain logged in after re-installing the Add-in.
That's it! You should now have the latest version of the PERRLA Add-in ready to go.

Below are some of the recent updates that have required a change inside of Microsoft Word. There are many new features that we can release that don't require any changes from Word. You can learn more about our other big updates here.
Update July 2021
We're getting things ready for the new MLA 9th Edition format that will be coming this Fall semester. Here are a few things that we've updated for you:
- Simpler Paper Create options
We've simplified the paper create options to be more flexible as we add more formats. You'll now choose the paper format in the Create panel instead of in the dropdown. - New Paper Types: Reference List & Annotated Bibliography
Now you can create two new paper types for APA 7 & MLA 9 (coming soon). Both of these types are just references - no title page or body in sight! - Paper Review is added to the PERRLA Ribbon
The Paper Review panel now gets a button all of its own next to Help & Settings. It is a checklist of some of our student's most common errors and the ability to create a new, clean copy of your paper without any of the PERRLA content controls.
Update Spring 2020
- APA 7th Edition Everything!
We're adding the new APA edition and it brings a lot of behind-the-scenes changes.
It includes new APA 7 versions of our paper types, a brand new reference engine, more flexible citations, and the ability to search for references.
