The legacy versions of PERRLA for Word will be permanently shut down on July 31, 2021. After July 31, the application will not sync with our servers or work.
You must update to the new PERRLA for Word Add-in to use APA 7th Edition or the upcoming MLA 9th Edition (Fall 2021).

The APA 7th Edition & MLA 9th Edition functionality is NOT being added to our older “legacy” versions of our software. If you’re still using our old software, it’s time for you to make the easy switch to our latest and greatest software for your papers.
You can know you're using a legacy version of PERRLA if you have a start-up application that launches before you use Microsoft Word.
APA 7 & MLA 9 Functionality in new PERRLA Add-in for Word
In October 2019, the American Psychological Association released a new version of their publication manual – the 7th Edition. The MLA 9th Edition was released in April 2021 and will be added to PERRLA for the Fall 2021 semester.
Here are some of the many new features you'll find in both PERRLA Online & PERRLA for Word:
- A brand new reference engine
Reference types have been simplified to their most basic forms (Book, Journal, Website, etc.). We've also streamlined the Reference Engine form so that it's simple and straightforward.
- Auto-fill Reference Creation
You can now search for Books, Journals, and Websites using a DOI, ISBN, URL, or Author & Title information. We'll pull back the references data and enter it into the form for you. Say goodbye to manually entering references!
- Customized Citations
When adding citations to your paper, you can now choose what parts of the citation you want to include. For instance, if you've already mentioned the author, you can leave the Contributor Name out of the citation.
- Consolidated Interface
PERRLA Online and PERRLA for Word now use the same Ribbon Bar & Panels for adding References, Citations, Tables, Figures, Headings, Abstracts, & more. The new interface makes finding features and using PERRLA simpler than ever before.
