Working with Citations in APA 7 & MLA 9 (Word Add-in)

The APA 7th Edition update brings new citation features to the PERRLA for Word Add-In, offering even more functionality when it comes to citing your references.

Creating your citations

In APA 7th Edition papers, you can create citations in the same way as usual.  Here's how:

1. Add a reference to your paper
   You can create a new reference or add an existing one from your library.
2. Place your cursor where you want the citation
3. Click "+ Add citation" beneath the reference in the PERRLA References & Citations panel
4. Enter the citations information
5. Click Create Citation

That's all there is to it!

New Feature: Narrative citations

In a narrative citation, the author's name appears in the sentence itself and not within parentheses.

In the example above, we reference author Cliff Christi's work and mention Christi by name in the sentence. Therefore, to include his name in a parenthetical citation at the end of the sentence would be redundant. The APA recognizes this by allowing us to omit the author's name from the citation.

Creating narrative citations is a breeze with the PERRLA for Word Add-In.

Here's how to create a narrative citation in the PERRLA Word Add-In:

1. Place the cursor where you want the citation
2. Click +Add Citation under the correct reference
3. Select the Parts to include in citation. In our example, we only selected Date.
4. Click Create Citation

Tah-dah! You have created a narrative citation!

New Feature: Live preview

When creating a citation for APA 7th Edition papers, you we've added the ability to see a live preview of the citation before you add it to the panel.

In the PERRLA panel, just above the Parts to include in citation heading, the PERRLA Word Add-In generates a Live Preview of the citation, giving you a sneak peek at exactly how the citation will look when you add it to your paper!

It will automatically update as you enter the citation's information so you know it will be right before you create it.

Note: Citations for group authors that have an abbreviation (e.g., the American Psychological Association & APA), the preview will only show the full group author's name.  However, when the citation is added, if the reference has been used before, PERRLA will create the proper second-use version of the citation with the group author's abbreviation.
