What is the Syllabus Tool?
The Syllabus Tool in PERRLA Online allows you to create assignments, papers, to-do's, and reminders directly from your class syllabus. It makes it easy to add your entire semester's work into PERRLA Online, so you can see everything you have to do in one place.

What you need to get started
There are two things you need to get started: a class in PERRLA Online and a digital version of your syllabus.
You create a few Classes when you sign up for PERRLA Online, but you can always create a new Class with the Create New button in PERRLA Online.
You’ll also need to be able to access your Syllabus on your computer – either as a PDF, Word document, or through your internet browser.
How to start they Syllabus Tool
You can find the Syllabus Tool in the Syllabus tab inside your PERRLA Online Classes. You can open a Class by clicking it in the side-bar or in the Classes Module.
First, you have to upload your syllabus to PERRLA Online.
If your syllabus is a file on your computer (like a Word document or PDF), select the File option. Then, select the syllabus file from your computer and click Upload.
If you can only access your Syllabus online as a web-page use the Text option. This shows a text editor where you can paste your syllabus into PERRLA Online from a website. Once your syllabus is ready, click Save.
After uploading your syllabus, you should see its content in the tab. If something looks different from the original Syllabus (which sometimes happens when importing a PDF), you can edit the imported content by clicking Edit in the bottom right of the tab.
If it looks good, then you’re ready to start the importing items with the Syllabus Tool.
Click Import Data with Syllabus Tool in the top right corner of the Syllabus tab to get started.
How to add items with the Syllabus Tool
The Syllabus tool has two sides: the left side shows your Syllabus & the right side is where you’ll find the items you’re importing from your Syllabus.
Each tab on the right side of the Syllabus Tool can be used to create the various types of PERRLA Online items (Papers, Assignments, etc.). You can select the tab for the kind of item you want to create.
All you have to do is highlight information in your syllabus and then tell PERRLA what to do with the highlighted text. It works like an assembly machine where you put in text and get back PERRLA Online items.
The Syllabus Tool works the same way no matter what type of item you want to create. Here's how:
- Highlight text in the Syllabus
- Select an item field from the drop-down menu
- Repeat as needed
- Click Create
For example, if you want to create an Assignment, go to the Assignment tab. Highlight the Assignment's name in the Syllabus. Then select Assignment Name from the drop-down menu. Highlight the Due Date and select Assignment Due Date. You can then click Create to save the Assignment in the Syllabus Tool.
Each time you click Create, PERRLA will add the item in a list on the right side and reset the fields above (so they're ready for the next item).
Now, this is really important. PERRLA hasn’t added these items into your Class just yet. While you’re using the Syllabus Tool, these items are kind of like rough drafts. They aren’t finalized so don’t close your tab or exit out of the Syllabus Tool yet.
You can edit items in the list by just clicking them in the list on the right side of the Syllabus Tool. Once you're done editing it, click Save.
The last step is to click Finish in the bottom right corner of the tab. This will finalize all of the items that you've created in the Syllabus Tool and add them to your Class in PERRLA Online.
Now, all of that class’s schoolwork is ready for the semester. You won’t have to jump between multiple syllabi or worry about missing your next due item because it’ll all be right there in PERRLA Online, right at your fingertips.
