There are three things you need to know about Tables of Content in PERRLA Online:
- how it's created
- how to preview it in the Editor tab
- how to include a Table of Contents in your exported paper
How we build the Table of Contents
Just like in PERRLA for Word, the Table of Contents is built from the Headings in your paper (using PERRLA's built-in Heading styles). Each Heading that you create will become an entry in the Table of Contents.
However, unlike PERRLA for Word, you do not see the Table of Contents directly within the paper Editor in PERRLA Online. It is built and added to your paper with the correct information when you Export your paper (if the Table of Contents option is selected).
To add entries to the Table of Contents, add Headings to your paper. Each Heading will be added to your exported paper with the correct page number and heading level. In addition to the Headings, the Table of Contents will also display the correct information for the other parts of your paper (Title Page, Abstract, and References).
Previewing the Table of Contents in the Editor
Once you've added some content to your paper – including a few headings – you can preview the Table of Contents from within the Paper Editor tab.
In the middle of the second menu, there is an icon that for "TOC". That's for the Table of Contents.
Click this icon to see a preview of the items that will be included in your Table of Contents from the body of your paper. In the final exported paper, it will be formatted to match your chosen paper style (not like it is in the preview). The preview also does not include the parts of your paper outside of the paper's body text.
Including the Table of Contents in an exported paper
Like all PERRLA Online papers, when you are finished with your paper, you will want to download or export a version of it to turn in or print. This is the point where you can choose to include or exclude a Table of Contents in your final paper.
To include a Table of Contents in your downloaded/exported/printed paper, check the Table of Contents checkbox in the Export/Print tab. With it checked, the export process will build and include a perfectly formatted Table of Contents in your downloaded paper.
If you need to edit your Table of Contents, you can always open the downloaded paper to tweak it from there.
