How PERRLA makes figures in Word
PERRLA customizes Microsoft Word’s built-in figure functions to insert perfectly formatted figures for you. It automatically manages the Figure number and the Figure caption.
Adding a figure
To add a figure to your paper, make sure that your cursor is where you want the figure to appear in your text.
Once that is done, here's what you'll do:
- Click on Create Figure in the PERRLA menu
The PERRLA menu is located in the Word Add-Ins menu-tab. Don't use the Insert menu-tab if you want a correctly formatted figure.
- Choose the figure image
You can either locate the figure image on your computer (click Browse) or use an image that you have copied to your computer's clipboard. If you Browse to an image, select it and click OK.
- Add a Caption
- Click Create
That's it! PERRLA will insert your figure with a correct number and perfectly formatted caption.
Updating Figure numbers
If you delete a figure from your paper and the figure numbers are not updated, you can have Word re-number them for you. Here's how:
- Right-click the number in a Figure number (the 1 in "Figure 1")
- Click Update Field
That's it! Your figures should be renumbered from the beginning of the paper.
Be careful when you delete, move, or add additional figures to the middle of your paper. Figures are numbered based on their order. Altering that order may alter the following figure numbers. Be sure you double check that any reference you make to a figure in your paper is correct after all figures have been added.
