When working with a document in Microsoft Word, you may experience an issue where your paper's pages seem to have condensed, and your page numbers, running head, and page breaks have vanished. If this happens, don't worry! While this may seem like a tragedy with the formatting of the paper, it most likely is much simpler than that.
There are two main reasons why you may be experiencing this problem, both of which are very quick and easy fixes.
1. Hidden Page Breaks
The most common reason this happens is because Word, not PERRLA, has simply connected and hidden your page breaks. To fix this, just place your cursor on the line between page one and page two. Once your cursor is placed correctly, you may see a pop-up box that reads "Double-click to show white space". Even if you do not see that pop-up box, go ahead and double-click on that line. The paper will then return to the proper full view.
2. View Changed
If the problem is not being caused by hidden page breaks, the likely culprit is the View setting in Microsoft Word. "Print Layout" is the default view of your Word documents. However, you may have accidentally changed it without even realizing.
To resolve this, click on the View menu in the menu bar at the very top of the screen. Make sure "Print Layout" is selected as the view. That's it! The paper will then go back to the proper "Print Layout" view.
